One of the reasons for the decline of newspaper readership may be that by trumpeting Baghdad Bush’s lies--a $1.3 trillion tax cut mainly for the rich would not raise the deficit, mushroom cloud as a first warning, Saddam responsible for 9/11, Saddam able to hit the east coast with chemical and biological weapons, Mission Accomplished, spying on Americans made them safer, torture made American safer--they lost credibility themselves.
Hitler wrote about “the Big Lie,” a lie so big that no one would believe it would dare be a lie. Reagan’s idea was so many “big lies” that citizens would lose track of reality. | | | | It required former White House spokesman and Bush toady Scott McClellan to shatter the near-sacred Big Lie of a “liberal” media.” He revealed conservative, even right wing, unpatriotic, “deferential, complicit enablers” of George W. Bush. If you’re “complicit” in an illegal war, torture, rendition, spying on US citizens and other crimes don’t dare call yourself a patriot. It doesn’t matter how many times you dodged the draft or how fervently you have encouraged your children to duck the military or how earnestly you begged them to serve their country by shopping and fudging on taxes like their role models. If you are complicit in crimes against the American people you are not a patriot.
