Except for a few bestselling authors, most writers have a hard time making a living at what they love. There are the unpublished, still waiting for their first check. Those who have received advances are often shocked at how far the money doesn’t go, and if those advances aren’t “earned out” through sales, authors find themselves with ever-smaller advances or even dropped by their publishers. Expenses seem to increase, even if earnings don’t.

Some jobs enrich a writer’s literary life. They provide not only material sustenance but also an endless source of material. Other jobs intrude on the writing life. In the session “The Work Before the Work,” four authors—Annecy Báez, Rawi Hage, Said Sayrafiezadeh, and David Dante Troutt—talked about their various day jobs....
