The Jays, the Hawk, and the Warrior

Yesterday, I watched two blue jays mobbing a hawk, which was perched on a dead branch beside a pond. The hawk had, no doubt, invaded their territory, and they probably had a nest of chicks nearby. The jays circled the raptor's head and even dived, so recklessly, beneath her beak, as though daring her to pounce, whistling harshly the entire time. The hawk remained completely motionless, as though it would not deign to even acknowledge the presence of such rabble. At last, though, she wearily raised her shoulders, slowly spread her wings, flapped  a few times, then sped away.

After the hawk had left, the jays were also nowhere to be seen, yet I glimpsed one a minute later passing quietly overhead ....
