Ordinary Time
Tags: ordinary time, church year, seasons, 12 steps

I've been thinking about the quality of time, and what the constantly shifting seasonal cycles mean in my life. I heard the term "Ordinary Time" mentioned by the Rector at my church recently, and it reminded me how much I've always liked that phrase. Ordinary time -- plain time, time without end, simple time. I envision it as a calm sort of place. (And yes, 'place' is the word I mean, since I tend to think of time and space as essentially the same thing.) To me, Ordinary Time sounds more like the undefinable time of God's eternity, than the...

Legend of Bob the Good
Tags: homeless, prosperity, hungry, minimum wage, church volunteer

THE LEGEND OF BOB THE GOOD He was often called Bob the Good, most often by himself. He gave one percent more than a tithe, after taxes. He sat on the front row at worship service and said amen in a manly, robust way. In Sunday School class he sadly shook his head at heresy, factual error or perverse interpretation. Last Rites (novel)
Tags: novel, church, defrocked, Episcopal Church, ministry

Tom Reed grows up in a church family and follows his father’s footsteps into the ministry only to realize he made a big mistake. As the young rector of a dying parish in a remote part of the state he conducts lots of funerals, gives sermons that nobody listens to, and hears the confessions of the parish’s compulsive penitent. After a series of run-ins with the laymen who govern the church about issues such as flying the American flag on the front lawn and letting the youth group use the church for a rock concert, Tom feels increasingly isolated and unhappy. However, he puts off taking any steps that would upset his father, who is in a nursing home. Tom’s struggle to free himself from...

DO YOU HAVE A RAPTURE LAWYER?
Tags: religion, estate, rapture, church, pope, Southern Baptist, lawyer, liberal, Supreme Court, Jesus,

The Lord is going to return very soon, probably before the next election. If your chances of being raptured are greater than those of a pecan pie at a Baptist picnic you need a rapture lawyer. As you rise into glory, what happens to your estate? You may think you don't need a rapture lawyer because you have a valid will leaving everything to your wife. What if the rapture comes while you are driving your car, you disappear in the air, and your car goes smash into an X-rated video store? Your wife is going to the poor house, and your estate is going to a pornographer and pervert. You may think you don't need a rapture lawyer because you have given up driving, along...
