Bernhard Schlink and André Aciman met at the New York Public Library while Cullman Fellows.  They had adjacent work areas, but as Schlink said, “Sitting in our cubicles, we didn’t talk to each other.”  When they finally did, they didn’t talk about their books.
    “We were very shy,” Aciman replied.  “I was amazed that the man in the next cubicle was actually Bernhard Schlink!”
    Well, after yesterday’s event at the NYPL, it would be difficult to see them as shy.  In front of a sold-out audience the two men discussed very private aspects of themselves as they wrestled with the issues of exile and home, of love and the heart.  Their dialogue was rich.  The two friends jumped right in.
