Not Enough

There was a long line waiting to get into the Florence Gould Auditorium.  It snaked past a variety of shops and restaurants and a deli.  As I walked by, a handsomely dressed, dapper gentleman dashed out of the deli, pushing through the line.  “Goddamn do-gooders,” he shouted.  “Get out of my fuckin’ way.”
   
“How bizarre,” I thought, “but he’s probably right.”
    And when I walked into the French Institute, I believed him to be right.  Stunningly well-dressed people were taking their seats.  I counted four African Americans in the sold-out auditorium.
