After the disputed 2000 election a media consortium hired an independent contractor to count all the Florida presidential votes and report September 14. Three days after 9/11 was the optimal time for headlines proclaiming Bush’s presidency legitimate. When no report was given international media knew that despite the dirty tricks and the disenfranchisement of more than 70,000 registered black voters, Al Gore had won. When the report was finally released, US headlines stated that Bush had won and the only news was buried in the final paragraph following a tedious recount of the election and troubled aftermath.
