Lessons Learned: Politicize, Stonewall, Disappear US intelligence informed Lyndon Johnson that Nixon was trying to undermine efforts to reach a peace agreement with North Vietnam. Johnson believed revealing such treachery would rip apart the already divided country. He called Senator Everett Dirksen (R) and told him what Nixon was doing. “This is treason,” LBJ said. “I know,” Dirksen responded. Perhaps Johnson believed that if Republicans knew that he knew they would never do it again. Anna Chennault, Nixon’s messenger, reported the treachery in her book, The Education of Anna. The media yawned. They also showed little interest in the AFP story and a Frontline report that Reagan was attempting to block the release of US hostages held by Iran.
