I Samuel 20 Saul was the first king of Israel. Jonathan was crown prince, heir to the throne. David was the most popular man in Israel and if there had been an election David would likely be king. But Israel but not a democracy but a theocracy. Yahweh wanted to be Israel’s king but the people wanted an earthly king like other nations so Yahweh gave them Saul. Then later Yahweh chose David to succeed Saul rather than Jonathan. For David to become king, Saul and any of his relatives who might claim the throne for themselves had to be killed.
