| | | In a discussion panel with Azar Nafisi, Jonathan Franzen, and John Irving, one of the questions posed asked what role writers have in American society, in comparison to European countries. Are writers important, celebrated? Are they called upon to make comments in the newspapers, or asked to go on talk shows to impart a bit of wisdom? Not anymore.
John Irving brought this quote to the table: Who was it that said writers are the engineers of human souls? Who said it right before he killed a group of writers? Joseph Stalin. Irving argued that... | | | | | | | Thursday, July 21, 2011 4:55PM | | | | Publishing in the 21st Century | Tags: Publishing, Writers, Ebooks, E-readers
| | | Poets & Writers Magazine has a great article on the publishing industry, called, "Publishing in the Twenty-First Century" by Gabriel Cohen. It talks with author John B. Thompson, who wrote, Merchants of Culture: The Publishing Business in the Twenty-First Century. Thompson is one of the first people to analyze the business. He discusses the major influences affecting publishing since the 60s, like the mass-market book, the rise of retail shops, the rise of the power agent, and later the addition of electronic technology. It's an eye-opening article for any writer.

As a reminder, there's a key that unlocks the power of "why," as we'll see below.
How can asking "why" help when your critique group, mentor or inner critic recommends changes, maybe extensive changes? The criticism may be accurate. You may need to change a scene or delete it, but until you address the reason you wrote... | | | | | | | Wednesday, November 19, 2008 4:02PM | | | | The ideal writers' retreat | Tags: writing retreats, Costa Rica, Docelunas, poets and writers, Amherst Writers method
| | | If you had one week to write away from home, job, pets, etc., what would be your ideal surroundings? Would you choose to board a plane to a foreign country, or would a half-day car ride away be enough to jog your senses? Would you seek a retreat where you could immerse yourself in solitude, or one where workshops fill your notebook with new pages?

Docelunas is a 20-room, eco-friendly oasis at the foothills of the rainforest on the Pacific coast. I sought to fill a need that I'd heard expressed time and again from talented writers... | | | | | | | Tuesday, October 7, 2008 1:15PM | | | | Susan Wingate's 1st PEN Blogging | Tags: susan wingate, writer, writing, blogging, fiction, novelist, poet, playwright
