Dispatches from the Beijing Book Fair

Allison and I go shopping for gifts at the Pearl Market in the morning and visit the Loyang Lama Temple in the afternoon, where we have an excellent vegetarian lunch at the Temple restaurant.

In the evening we go to dinner at the ICOI Western Style Food Coffee Room. We’re seated in an underheated small banquet room decorated in what we suspect the restaurant thinks is an Italian theme—brick wallpaper & a plastic grapevine on the ceiling. Our menu tonight includes the following items:

  • Stir-fried Pork Chop with Salt
