Robert Bononno is a full-time translator and occasional photographer. He has taught translation at NYU and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Bononno was the recipient of an NEA grant in 2002 for his translation of the nonfiction work of Isabelle Eberhardt. In 2005 he was a finalist for the French-American Foundation prize for his translation of René Crevell's My Body and I. He was recently awarded a 2011 NEA grant for a new translation of Eugène Sue's Mysteries of Paris.
