Niloufar Talebi
TRANSLATES: Persian/Farsi
Award-winning translator, and theater artist, Niloufar Talebi was born in London to Iranian parents. She received a BA in Comparative Literature from UC Irvine, and an MFA in Writing and Literature from Bennington College. She studied theater with Jean Shelton and Cyril Clayton and has produced and performed nationally. She created TheTranslationProject.ORG is 2003 and is the editor/translator of BELONGING: New Poetry By Iranians Around the World (North Atlantic Books, 2008). Her translations have been anthologized and published in Two Lines, Poetry International, CIRCUMFERENCE, Agni on-line, Zoland Poetry, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, and she is the guest editor of the Spring 2006 issue of Rattapallax. She has presented at numerous venues including the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature, The National Arts Club, St. Mark’s Poetry Project, Asia Society, the New York Public Library, The New School, Universities of California at Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Irvine, California institute for the Arts, SUNY, CUNY, Yale University, Theater Artaud, Berkeley Repertory Theater, Actor’s Theater, ODC, and Intersection for the Arts. She created "ICARUS/RISE", a multimedia theatrical piece based on new Iranian poetry and inspired by the Iranian oral storytelling traditions of Naghaali and Pardeh-daari. She is the recipient of grants and translation prizes including from the James Irvine Foundation, the International Center for Writing and Translation (2004), the American Literary Translators Association (2005), the PEN/New York State Council on the Arts (2006) and the Willis Barnstone Translation Prize (2006). BELONGING was nominated for a 2008 Northern California Book Award. She is a member of ALTA, MESA and PEN American Center, and is an Artist in Residence at School of the Arts in San Francisco. She is currently working under commission on a libretto for a love song cycle, commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
