Verne Moberg

TRANSLATES: Swedish, Danish, Norwegian

Verne Moberg has taught Swedish and Scandinavian literature and culture at Columbia University since 1988 and has also taught these subjects at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Virginia, Gustavus Adolphus College, and UCLA.

With a Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an M.A. in Germanic languages and literatures rom S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook, she has earned praise for her translations of the prose and drama of Victoria Benedictsson and of poems and plays by Kristina Lugn. Moberg's 1997 translation of Lugn's play Aunt Blossom was awarded the Inger Sjöberg Prize in Translation by the American-Scandinavian Foundation, and in the spring of 2000 she was honored with a prize by the Swedish Academy of Stockholm, presented in recognition of her work in making Swedish literature better known and appreciated in the United States.

Dr. Moberg's special interests are 19th and 20th-century Scandinavian literature, women's studies, gay history, and translation. She is a member of S.A.S.S., S.W.E.A., and PEN.
