A lover of music and words, with studies at Yale, UT, the Sorbonne, and the University of Buenos Aires, Michele has translated considerable Argentine literature and is currently translating a very moving journal written in France during the Nazi occupation, thanks to a 2009 NEA grant. Books
In So Corrupt an Age.In progress. Thanks to a generous grant by the National Endowment for the Arts, I am currently translating Une Saison gâtée (In So Corrupt an Age), the war journal of economist Charles Rist(1874-1955), edited and annotated by Jean-Noël Jeanneney (Fayard, 1983). The journal, written during the German occupation of France, is a moving account of the struggle of Rist’s family and friends to survive, as well as a unique insight into the workings of the Vichy government. The journal ends in 1945 as the Nuremberg trials begin.
Mad Toy, an English translation of Roberto Arlt’s novel El juguete rabioso, with introductory poem, essays, and supplemental material. Duke University Press, 2002. Finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters Translation award.

Nonfiction Excerpts from French philosophers André Glucksmann (The Discourse of Hatred) and Alain Finkielkraut (In the Name of the Other: Reflections on the Coming Anti-Semitism) for the upcoming publication by Yale UP of an anthology on contemporary Jewish culture covering the years since 1973. The volume, the last in a series, is part of the Posen Library of Jewish Civilization and Culture.
