With the Japanese Nuclear Disaster creating a huge dead zone in Japan like that in Chernobyl, it is time for all writers to come out against fail deadly nuclear energy. Imagine the books and libraries, writers and readers who were destroyed by radiation in Japan and Chernobyl. Those in the New York Metropolitan Area where PEN American Center is located, and a large number of libraries, writers and much of the publishing industry reside, should be aware that Indian Point, the nuclear plant in the wake of 20 million people, just up the Hudson River and less than 50 miles from The City is the MOST DANGEROUS PLANT in the USA. We have 104 nuclear plants and a third of those with the failed Japanese technology, and INDIAN POINT in Buchanan NY near the City is one of them. Plus, it is built on earthquakes faults, discovered AFTER it was built. It has spent fuel lying around in unprotected tanks, just as the Japanese failed plants scenario, and it is due for re-licensing. Gov. Cuomo has wanted to shut it down, but the Democratic Party has pressure from President Obama who has put 36 billion in the budget for nuclear energy development and who accepted large campaign contributions from nuclear industrialists. Obama has been misled about the safety of nuclear energy. That 36 billion should go to new renewable energy development instead, unless some of it is for clean up of old outmodede plants like Indian Point. Now is the time to call Governor Andrew Cuomo and pressure him to shut down Indian Point or none of our books and writings will matter much if the Met Area becomes a huge irradiated dead zone. How many of us are aware that climate change is scientifically connected to the increased earthquake activity and heavy storms, blizzards, hurricanes, and tsunami we are witnessing of late? Call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390. Or write him an e-mail message at www.Governor.ny.gov/contact/GovernorContactForm.php. This is not a political issue. This is a health and safety issue as there is no art without life and no life for writers with no books. All of our homes and libraries could be within a dead zone if Indian Point Nuclear Plant errupts and that is NOT an exaggeration. There is no trusting the NRC for sure, as the NRC favors the nuclear industrialists, as does our president. Even the NYTimes Science Section on March 29th warned that Indian Point is one of the highest risk plants in the country, and there are no guaranties. Remember that Shoreham nuclear plant on Long Island never opened because of the bravery and wisdom of Mario Cuomo on this issue. Andrew Cuomo, now Governor of NY, wanted to deny re-licensing to Indian Point when he was Attorney General. Now is the time to call and write to him to give him the support and backbone he needs to shut down Indian Point, buck the nuclear industrialists, and convert Buchanan NY to an industrial center for alternative renewable energy components. No one will be reading our books and buying them in the event of an Indian Point disaster that could bankrupt the entire economy of the country, as well as the health of the writers and publishing industry workers of the entire NorthEastern USA. Call and write today, please, as this is a time for conscience, and conscience is apolitical when it comes to the health of people and their environment, as there is no art without the people to read it and the environment in which to enjoy it. Thanks if you've read this far and are with me. | | | |
