About Hillary and Caroline

As Hillary R. Clinton prepares to step into the expensive shoes of current Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, news commentators have largely avoided noticing any similarities in style or stance between our tough, hard-nosed Ms.Rice and Mrs. Clinton. Yet enough similarities exist that I suspect much of what Mrs. Clinton will do during her initial months in that office will be to reinvent herself as someone who can transcend the stern, cold, win-by-whatever-means-necessary personna that made Condi famous (and in some quarters, feared). This may be harder to do than she thinks.

Meanwhile, back in New York State, I have high hopes for Caroline Kennedy. Kennedy has chosen the best possible time to step into the political arena. A woman of optimism, vision and quiet power who has until now shunned the media spotlight, I have little doubt that she pursues the New York Senate seat as the place she can do the greatest good, not as a stepping stone to a higher office. If she steps into the senatorial spot which Hillary prepares to leave, I would hope she would not only use her seat to support President Obama's initiatives, but to improve the civic awareness and quality of life for all New Yorkers: upstate and downstate as well as side to side.
