Frank O’Hara’s collection Lunch Poems was banned from English classes at Colorado’s Aurora High School in 1976 for sexual content. In celebration of this year’s Banned Books Week, today’s podcast features Claire Donato reading “Ave Maria” and drawing the haunting connection between O’Hara’s description of the “darker joys” to be found in movie theatres and the mass shooting which took place in an Aurora movie theater three years ago. The piece was originally a part of the 2013 PEN event Paradise Banned: Poetry Readings from Banned Books.
