Jianying Zha
Jianying Zha is the author of several books in Chinese and English, including China Pop: How Soap Operas, Tabloids and Bestsellers are Transforming a Culture (1996). Bashi Niandai Fangtanlu—a collection of Chinese-language interviews with 11 prominent mainland intellectuals active in 1980s cultural circles—was selected as one of the ten best books of 2006 by many publications in China.

Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker and The New York Times, among others. In 2003, Zha was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in nonfiction. Her latest book is Tide Players: The Movers and Shakers of a Rising China (The New Press, 2011).

She lives in Beijing and New York.
