Marie Ponsot has published numerous works, including The Green Dark (1988), Admit Impediment (1981), and True Minds (1957). Her poems are celebrated for their elegance and wit.
Her 1999 Bird Catcher won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was a finalist for the 1999 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Her next collection, Springing (2002), was a New York Times Notable Book.
Ponsot has translated over 37 books from French to English, including Love & Folly: Selected Fables and Tales of La Fontaine. She has co-authored with Rosemary Deen two books about the fundamentals of writing, Beat Not the Poor Desk (1982) and Common Sense (1985). She has also written radio and television scripts.
Among her awards are a writing grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Robert Frost Poetry Award, the Shaughnessy Medal of the Modern Language Association and the Delmore Schwarz Memorial Prize. Ponsot has taught at the Beijing United University, New York University and Queen’s College, where she specialized in the SEEK programs for minority students. She currently teaches in the graduate writing program at Columbia University in New York City.
