Nikki Giovanni is a poet and the author of more than twenty books.
Her literary prowess and activism have earned her numerous awards and honors. She has been given more than twenty honorary degrees and the keys to over a dozen cities, and was named "Woman of the Year" by Ebony in 1970, Mademoiselle in 1971, and Ladies' Home Journal in 1972. Her autobiography Gemini was a finalist for the 1973 National Book Award. She received three NAACP Image awards (for Love Poems, Blues: For All the Changes, and Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea), and was given the first Rosa L. Parks Woman of Courage Award. Her children's book Rosa was a 2006 Caldecott Honors book.
She is currently a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech.
