Hermanis won the Best Production of the Year Award and the Best Debut in Stage Direction Award at the annual theater festival of Latvia in 1993 for his first performance Marquise de Sade. Since then Hermanis has staged several performances a year at the New Riga Theatre (NRT), where he became the artistic director in 1997. His work has won him many prizes in Latvia and has been shown at international theater festivals in Europe, Russia, and Canada. In 2007, Hermanis was awarded the IX Europe Prize for New Theatrical Realities.
