Dinaw Mengestu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1978. When he was two years old, he came with his family following the communist revolution in Ethiopia.
His first novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, was awarded the 2007 Guardian First Book Award. Mengestu is also a recipient of a 2007 Lannan Fiction Fellowship, the Prix du Premier Roman Etranger, and a 5 Under 35 Award from the National Book Foundation.
He lives in New York.
