Born in Medellín, Colombia, Jorge Franco studied film at the London Film School and literature at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá.
He made his literary debut in 1991 when he was awarded the Pedro Gómez Valderrama National Narrative Prize for his collection of short stories entitled Maldito amor. His first novel, Mala Noche, won the Ciudad de Pereira National Novel Competition.
His novel Rosario Tijeras was awarded the Hammett International Prize, has been translated into 14 languages, and has been adapted into a film. His book Paradise Travel has also been translated into several languages and will be made into a film. His most recent novel is Melodrama.
Franco is considered one of the most prominent young writers in Latin America, and has earned a place alongside several world-renowned Colombian writers. Gabriel García Márquez has said about Jorge Franco: “This is one of the Colombian authors I would like to pass the torch to.”
