Barbara Parsons is the author of Reawakening Through Nature: A Prison Reflection and Puzzle Pieces, which charts her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse.
Convicted of “manslaughter due to emotional duress” following the shooting of her abusive husband, she received a 25-year prison sentence, which was suspended after ten years. In 2004, Parsons won the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award, an international honor given to writers whose freedom of speech is under attack.
Today, Parsons has become a sought-after guest speaker in regional universities, addressing the subjects of domestic violence and prison reform.
