Mahmoud Darwish, a Palestinian, was a prominent Arabic poet.
He received the Lannan Foundation Prize for Cultural Freedom, Holland’s Prince Claus Award, Struga’s Golden Wreath Award, and was a Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
The Butterfly’s Burden, a collection of his most recent poetry, was published in 2006.
He died in August 2008.
