Paulo Sergio Pinheiro held the mandate of UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar from 2000 to 2008. He is also a member of the Sub-Commission for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights.
In 2003, Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Pinheiro as an independent expert, with the rank of Assistant Secretary-General, to prepare an in-depth study into the global phenomenon of violence against children. He has also served as a member of the Justice and Peace Commission in São Paulo, and as secretary of state for human rights under Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
He is the author of many books, articles, and reports, and has taught at the Universidade de São Paulo, Columbia, Notre Dame, Brown, Oxford, and other universities.
