Mark Kurlansky was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1948.
He is The New York Times best-selling and award-winning author of many books of nonfiction, including The Last Fish Tale; Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World; Salt: A World History; and most recently, Nonviolence: The History of a Dangerous Idea, as well as the novel Boogaloo on 2nd Avenue.
He is the winner of the James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence in food writing, a Bon Appétit American Food and Entertaining Award for Food Writer of the Year, and the Glenfiddich Food and Drink Award for Food Book of the year, and he was a finalist for The Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
He lives in New York City.
