Nawal El Saadawi was born in Kafr Tahla village in Egypt in 1931.
A novelist and psychiatrist, she writes in Arabic, and is the author of more than 40 books which have been translated, acclaimed, and awarded around the world. Her work on the situation of women has had a deep effect on successive generations of young women over the past four decades.
She has been awarded several national and international literary prizes and has lectured in many universities and organized and participated in international and national conferences.
She is Founder and President of The Arab Women’s Solidarity Association and has been involved with many other organizations on behalf of women’s rights and human rights, and she has frequently been targeted by the Egyptian government as a result.
El Saadawi has been imprisoned, lost influential positions, had her writing banned, and received death threats.
