Rika Lesser was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1953.
She is a former chair of PEN's Translation Committee, has published four books of poetry; the most recent is Questions of Love: New & Selected Poems.
She has translated poetry collections by Göran Sonnevi, Gunnar Ekelöf, and Claes Andersson, as well as Rilke and Hesse (including Siddhartha: An Indic Poem).
Among the awards she has received are the Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship, fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Translation Prize of the Swedish Academy.
She served as Swedish-language editor for Graywolf’s New European Poets. Yale University Press will publish her translation of Sonnevi’s Mozart’s Third Brain in the fall.
