An Evening with PEN American Center Presented by Mixer Reading and Music Series

Join PEN and the Mixer Reading and Music Series for a night of literature and musicwith readings by Sarah Arvio, Luis Jaramillo, and Tiphanie Yanique and a musical performance by Silver Ripples with hosts Melissa Febos and Rebecca Keith.

Sarah Arvio’s latest book is night thoughts: 70 dream poems & notes from an analysis, a hybrid work: poetry, essay, memoir. Her earlier books of poems are Visits from the Seventh and Sono: cantos. She has won the Rome Prize and the Bogliasco and Guggenheim fellowships, among other honors. For many years a translator for the United Nations in New York and Switzerland, she has also taught poetry at Princeton. She now lives in Maryland, by the Chesapeake Bay.

Luis Jaramillo is the author of The Doctor’s Wife, winner of the Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Contest, an Oprah Book of the Week, and one of NPR’s Best Books of 2012. Luis’s stories and criticism have appeared in Tin House, Open City, and The Coffin Factory, among other publications. Luis is the interim director of the School of Writing at The New School, where he also teaches courses in fiction and is co-editor of the journal The Inquisitive Eater: New School Food.

Tiphanie Yanique is the author of the short story collection, How to Escape from a Leper Colony, published by Graywolf Press, and the novel Land of Love and Drowning, which will be published by Riverhead/Penguin on July 10th. Her writing has won the 2011 BOCAS Prize for Caribbean Fiction, Boston Review Prize in Fiction, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers Award, a Pushcart Prize, a Fulbright Scholarship and an Academy of American Poet’s Prize. She has been listed by the Boston Globe as one of the sixteen cultural figures to watch out for and by the National Book Foundation as one of the 5 Under 35. Her writing has been published in Best African American Fiction, The Wall Street Journal, American Short Fiction and other places. Tiphanie is from the Virgin Islands and is a professor in the MFA program at the New School.

Silver Ripples are the echoes of a thousand lives reverberating across the canyon of time, often getting stuck around the mid-90’s and arcing back to the present for a dark, ethereal, and rhythmic experience.
