PEN / Guernica at Lit Crawl NYC

PEN teams up with Guernica Magazine in support of the Guernica/PEN Flash Series and PEN Poetry Series. 

Join us on the second stop of the annual Lit Crawl NYC on Saturday, September 13th for a night of literature and libations. Featuring readings from Eric Boyd, Phil Klay, Abeer Hoque, Ali Power, and Genya Turovskaya.
 

ERIC BOYD lives in Pittsburgh, donating plasma and undertaking various medical research studies. His writing has been published by, among others, the Missouri Review, Cheap Pop, and Fourth River. He appeared in Akashic Books’ recent Prison Noir anthology, edited by Joyce Carol Oates; next year Boyd will appear in another anthology, Words Without Walls, from Trinity University Press and featuring work by Oates, Jamaica Kincaid, Tim O’Brien, Denis Johnson, and more. Boyd was nominated for the Pushcart Prize and is a winner of the PEN Prison Writing Award. This past summer he was selected to attend the Tin House writing workshop in Portland, Oregon. Currently, Boyd takes the Greyhound to New York each week to attend classes at the Writer’s Foundry MFA in Brooklyn. Eric Boyd’s tumblr page is a ‘spotlighted’ blog on that website, highlighting his daily six word stories/poems, as well as longer works.

PHIL KLAY is the author of Redeployment, a collection of short stories about the Iraq war. His work has appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, Newsweek, Granta, and Tin House.

ALI POWER is an editor at Rizzoli International Publications and co-founder of Maggy Poetry Magazine. She is the editor of New York School Painters & Poets (Rizzoli, October 2014). Power’s poems have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, LIT, the Pen Poetry Series, Washington Square, and elsewhere. Her chapbook You Americans was published by Green Zone Editions in 2008.

GENYA TUROVSKAYA is a poet, translator and psychotherapist. She was born in Kiev, Ukraine and grew up in New York City. She is the author of the chapbooks Calendar (UDP, 2002), The Tides (Octopus Books, 2007), New Year’s Day (Octopus Books, 2011) and Dear Jenny (Supermachine, 2011). Her poetry and translations of contemporary Russian poets have appeared in Fence, Chicago Review, Conjunctions, A Public Space, Aufgabe, Octopus, jubilat, Supermachine, Gulf Coast and other publications. Her translation of Aleksandr Skidan’s Red Shifting was published by Ugly Duckling Presse in 2008. She is the co-translator of Elena Fanailova’s Russian Version (UDP, 2010) which won the University of Rochester’s Three Percent 2010 award for Best Translated Book of Poetry. She is also a co-translator of Endarkenment: The Selected Poems of Arkadii Dragomoshchenko (Wesleyan University Press 2014). She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
