PEN is thrilled to welcome singer Joseph Keckler for the second installment of PEN’s fall DIY season. Hailed by The Village Voice as the “Best Downtown Performance Artist” in New York, singer, musician, and writer Keckler brings harmony to PEN DIY with a talk titled “How to Sing Yourself.”

Building on oral traditions, parables, and the rich history of artists as storytellers, PEN DIY celebrates how literature can be approachable yet unexpected, and how it can help us make sense of our lives. Hosted by Angela Ledgerwood.

Singer and writer Joseph Keckler has garnered acclaim for his rich, versatile 3+ octave voice and sharp wit. He often transforms his experiences and observations into stories, stage performances, videos, torch songs, and arias. In 2013, The Village Voice named him “Best Downtown Performance Artist” and most recently Keckler appeared as Chaliapin in Dave Malloy’s Preludes at Lincoln Center Theater. Keckler is the author of several performance pieces, including I am an Opera, which was commissioned by Dixon Place. His work has been featured on BBC America and WNYC Soundcheck and performances have taken place at SXSW, Merkin Hall, New Museum, Goethe Institut, and BAM, among other venues in the U.S. and abroad. The recipient of a Franklin Furnace Grant and a Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Work from New York Foundation for the Arts, he has been awarded multiple residencies at MacDowell and Yaddo.  He is currently working on a an EP, new performances, and collection of essays.  He sometimes writes about contemporary art for VICE. 

Australian-born Angela Ledgerwood is the creator and co-host of the literary podcast Lit Up. She began her career interviewing artists for Interview Magazine online before becoming an editor at Cosmopolitan, where she wrote and edited articles devoted to news and books. At Cosmo she interviewed some of her all-time favorite women, like Senator Elizabeth Warren, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Emily Mortimer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and more. She has an MFA in Creative Writing, and has lived in Sydney, Los Angeles, Nassau, The Bahamas, and now resides in Brooklyn, New York.
