Freedom to Write Awards

PEN/Newman's Own First Amendment Award

For the thirteenth consecutive year, Newman's Own, the food company whose founder and president, actor Paul Newman, donates all after-tax profits to charity, is funding a First Amendment Prize administered by PEN American Center. The award, $25,000, is presented each spring to a U.S. resident who has fought courageously, despite adversity, to safeguard the First Amendment right to freedom of expression as it applies to the written word.

PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Awards

This is the 18th year that PEN American Center has honored international writers who have been persecuted for the exercise of their right to freedom of expression with Freedom to Write Awards, and the 11th year that PEN member Barbara Goldsmith has generously underwritten the awards. A total of 35 writers have received the award since 1987. The awards are a powerful tool in PEN American Center's year-round efforts to end the persecution of individual writers.
