Richard Howard
|
Richard Howard was born in Ohio in 1929.
He has over 150 French translations to his credit, among them Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal,
for which he received the American Book Award. Other translation awards
include the PEN American Center medal and the Ordre National du Mérite
from the French government.
Howard has also published numerous collections of his own poetry,
notably Untitled Subjects, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in
1970.
He is also the author of Alone with America: Essays on the Art of Poetry in the United States Since 1950 and has been an editor of The Best American Poetry.
He was president of the PEN American Center (1979-80) and Poet Laureate
of New York State (1994-96), in addition to holding several teaching
positions.
He lives in New York City where he teaches at Columbia University.
