Barbara Goldsmith
Barbara Goldsmith Barbara Goldsmith was born in New York City in 1937.

A noted author and historian, Goldsmith's popular and critically acclaimed books include The Straw Man, Little Gloria...Happy At Last, Johnson v. Johnson, Other Powers: The Age of SuffrageSpiritualism and the Scandalous Victoria Woodhull, and Obsessive Genius: The Inner World of Marie Curie.

She has written numerous articles, profiles, and essays for The New Yorker, The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Vanity Fair. Her awards include the New York Times notable books, best nonfiction (Association of American Publishers), Los Angeles Times book prize finalist, Boston Globe best book of the year, NYPL Literary Lions, the Guild Hall Lifetime Literary Achievement Award, two Presidential writing citations, two television Emmys, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her most recent book, Obsessive Genius:  The Inner World of Marie Curie, has been translated into eleven languages.

Barbara Goldsmith is the force behind the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Awards, which she has presented annually for the past 19 years to spotlight the plight of imprisoned and persecuted writers of conscience the world over. Of the 30 writers who were imprisoned at the time of the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith award, 28 were subsequently released.
