2012 AWARDS

The submission period for 2012 awards is October 1, 2011 to February 1, 2012.

PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, Founded by Barbara Kingsolver ($25,000)
to the author of a previously unpublished novel that addresses issues of social justice and the impact of culture and politics on human relationships. Submission for this award ends December 31, 2011. 

This award will be offered for the first time in 2012.

PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize ($25,000)
for an exceptionally talented fiction writer whose debut work--a first novel or collection of short stories published in 2011--represents distinguished literary achievement and suggests great promise.

PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction ($25,000)
for an exceptionally talented writer of fiction whose body of work places him or her in the highest rank of American literature.

PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award ($10,000)
for a book of literary nonfiction on the subject of the physical or biological sciences published in 2011.

PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award ($7,500)
for a dramatist in mid-career whose literary achievements are vividly apparent in the rich and striking language of his or her work and a master American dramatist in recogntion of his or her body of work.

PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay ($5,000)
for a book of essays published in 2011 that exemplifies the dignity and esteem of the essay form.

PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing ($5,000)
for a nonfiction book on the subject of sports published in 2011.

PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing ($5,000)
for a writer whose body of work represents an exceptional contribution to the field.

PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography ($5,000)
for a distinguished biography published in 2011.

PEN Open Book Award ($5,000)
for an exceptional work of literature by a writer of color published in 2011.

PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship ($5,000)
for a significant published author of children or young adults' fiction to aid in completing a book-length work in progress.

PEN/Steven Kroll Award ($5,000)
 for an American or U.S.-based writer for exceptional text illustrated in a picture book.

This award will be offered for the first time in 2012.

PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry ($5,000)
 for a poet whose distinguished and growing body of work represents a notable presence in American literature.

PEN Award for Poetry in Translation ($3,000)
for a distinguished book of poetry in translation published in 2011.

PEN/Edward and Lily Tuck Award for Paraguayan Literature ($3,000)
for the author of a major work of Paraguayan literature not yet translated into English.

PEN Translation Prize ($3,000)
for a distinguished book-length prose translation published in 2011.

PEN Translation Fund Grants ($2,000–$4,000)
to support the translation of book-length works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry or drama that have not previously appeared in English or have appeared only in an outdated or otherwise flawed translation.

PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation
to a translator whose career has demonstrated a commitment to excellence through the body of his or her work.


2011 AWARDS

PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize ($25,000)
for an exceptionally talented fiction writer whose debut work—a first novel or collection of short stories published in 2010—represents distinguished literary achievement and suggests great promise.

PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award ($10,000)
for a book of literary nonfiction on the subject of the physical or biological sciences published in 2010.

PEN/W. G. Sebald Award for a Fiction Writer in Mid-Career ($10,000)
for an author who has published at least three significant works of literary fiction.

PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction ($10,000)
for a distinguished book of general nonfiction possessing notable literary merit and critical perspective published in 2009 or 2010.

PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award for an American Playwright in Mid-Career and a Master American Dramatist ($7,500)
for a dramatist in mid-career whose literary achievements are vividly apparent in the rich and striking language of his or her work and a master American dramatist in recogntion of his or her body of work.

PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay ($5,000)
for a book of essays published in 2010 that exemplifies the dignity and esteem of the essay form.

PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing ($5,000)
for a nonfiction book on the subject of sports published in 2010.

PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports Writing ($5,000)
for a writer whose body of work represents an exceptional contribution to the field.

PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography ($5,000)
for a distinguished biography published in 2010.

PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry ($5,000)
 for an emerging American poet of any age showing promise of further literary achievement.

PEN/Nora Magid Award ($5,000)
for a magazine editor whose high literary standards and taste have contributed significantly to the excellence of the publication he or she edits.

PEN Open Book Award ($5,000)
for an exceptional work for literature by a writer of color published in 2010.

PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship ($5,000)

for a significant published author of children or young adults' fiction to aid in completing a book-length work in progress.

PEN Award for Poetry in Translation ($3,000)
for a distinguished book of poetry in translation published in 2010.

PEN Translation Prize ($3,000)
for a distinguished book-length prose translation published in 2010.

Translation Fund Grants ($3,000)
to support the translation of book-length works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry or drama that have not previously appeared in English or have appeared only in an outdated or otherwise flawed translation.

PEN Emerging Writers Awards ($1,660)
one award each to an up-and-coming fiction writer, nonfiction writer, and poet who shows exceptional talent but who has yet to publish a book-length work.
