PEN RECOMMENDS
|
What are we missing? What important books written in other languages are not available in English?
When that question was put to them in 2002, PEN members sent in answers which were subsequently published in the PEN America 2: Home & Away.
A subsequent NEA study,
limited to fiction and poetry, found that out of more than 10,000 works
of fiction and poetry published in the United States in 1999, only 300
were translations. The PEN Translation
Committee followed up on PEN America's initiative to create an ongoing, on-line list of books that PEN members recommend for translation.
We are now asking all PEN members to help us update this list. |

LETTER TO THE PEN MEMBERSHIP ON HURRICANE KATRINA
|
From Salman Rushdie & A.M. Homes: We have all watched in horror the suffering of those
affected by Hurricane Katrina and the tragic delays in relief efforts.
It is our hope that PEN can effectively channel our collective outrage
and also provide some financial aid for those writers, translators,
editors and agents most in need. |
