FOUND IN TRANSLATION

Speaking across geographies, styles, and literary conventions, this year’s translation feature showcases some of the most interesting voices—old and new—in international literature today. Included are translations of works by Macedonio Fernández, Ayane Kawata, Robert Walser, Eshkol Nevo, Wei Ying-wu, and Ahmad Shamlu, as well as a Brazilian Portuguese Translation Slam; a conversation between Anthea Bell & Doris Orgel; and new online resources for translators.

ONLINE TRANSLATION SLAM

In our most recent installment, Jennifer Sarah Cooper and Odile Cisneros test their linguistic mettle on “roça barroca,” a poem by Brazilian poet, translator, and editor Josely Vianna Baptista.

roça barroca

As almas são visíveis em forma de sombras
.
Da religião Guarani, via Schaden

viu o primeiro sol
depois do inverno
desembrulhar, folho por
folho, os rebentos

em cada greta
e grumo
do terreno
foi descobrindo
grelos
e vergônteas,
ocelos verdes
e outros
arremedos

no alfobre
farto de bolor
e mofo,
sobre os sulcos
cheios
de refolhos
—em cada covo
um eco de silêncio,
a própria sombra
um paroxismo
de roxos
