The Breakthrough Novel Award is offered annually for general fiction and young adult fiction. Each winner receives a publishing deal from Penguin with a $15,000 advance. Amazon Encore will publish close to a dozen other entrants. 
 

Bucknell University

The Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing provides four months of writing time during Bucknell’s fall semester, without formal academic obligations, and a stipend of $4,000 for a young writer with some record of accomplishment. 
 

Brown University

A fellowship valued at $45,000 (funds for relocation to the United States, living expenses, and an office on the Brown University campus for 12 months) is given annually to an established international writer “who is unable to practice free expression in his or her homeland.”
 

Sarabande Books

The Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry awards $2,000 and publication by Sarabande for a full-length volume of poetry (minimum of 48 pages). Winners also receive a standard royalty contract.
 

Fourth Genre

The Michael Steinberg Essay Prize of $1,000 and publication in Fourth Genre: Explorations in Nonfiction is given annually for an essay of up to 6,000 words of creative nonfiction.
