Order the Handbook for Writers in Prison
Free upon request to prisoners who want to further their education, The Handbook for Writers in Prison can also be ordered on behalf of a friend or loved one who is incarcerated. To date, PEN has distributed 20,000 copies of the handbook and continues to receive requests.

Words Over Walls: Starting a Writing Workshop in Prison is a handbook directed to those on the outside who are interested in beginning this work. It was written by Hettie Jones, former chair of the PEN Prison Writing Program, and Janine Pommy Vega, a member of the Prison Writing Committee; both have taught writing workshops in prisons for many years.

Doing Time: 25 Years of Prison Writing, a PEN American Center Prize Anthology, is a selection from the first twenty-five years of the PEN Prison Writing Contest. With a Soros Senior Justice Fellowship, Bell Gale Chevigny, the chair of the PEN Prison Writing Program and Professor Emerita of literature at SUNY Puchase, edited this anthology.
