What are we missing? What important books written in other languages are not available in English?
In 2002, PEN members sent in answers that were subsequently published in the PEN America 2: Home & Away.
Not surprisingly, the responses were numerous. An NEA study found that out of more than 10,000 works
of fiction and poetry published in the United States in 1999, only 300
were works in translation. UNESCO figures showed that while 50 percent of all
translations published worldwide are translated from English, only 6 percent
are translated into English. Clearly, in the dialogue with the world's
non–English-speaking majority, we are not very good listeners.
PEN members: Help update our list and nominate books you consider to be of great merit that are not
currently in print in the United States in English. Books once
translated but now out of print, or books published in English but
outside the United States are eligible.
