Shan Sa
Shan Sa

Shan Sa was born in Beijing

 

Before she left Beijing for Paris in 1990, she published four compilations of poems. From 1994 to 1996 she worked for the painter Balthus. 

 

In 1997 she published her first novel, Gate of Celestial Peace, and won the Goncourt Prize for First Novels. Her second novel, The Four Lives of the Willow, won the Cazes Prize. In 2001, The Girl Who Played Go obtained the student’s Goncourt Prize in France and the Kiriyama Prize in the United States. Her next book, The Forbidden Crown, will be published in 2005.
