Nursing the Master’s Children

I nursed the Master’s children mine / And left

crying the Master’s children mine to nurse the Master’s children kept

Me pregnant was the only work he did

And don’t need     to feel anything for it

to keep a crying thing alive

I felt     my milk going out

relieved     / And sick like

As if the Master if he ever had had

fed me from his own plate

Once a week, the PEN Poetry Series publishes work by emerging and established writers from coast to coast. Subscribe to the Poetry Series mailing list and have poems delivered to your e-mail as soon as they are published (no spam, no news, just poems). We hope you like the pieces we find as much as we do, and pass them on.
