NEW YORK, N.Y. – National Book Award winner Phil Klay and Oprah Winfrey favorite Cynthia Bond are among the authors on the shortlist for awards presented by the PEN American Center.

The literary and human rights organization on Thursday announced finalists for a wide range of subjects. Klay (“Redeployment”) and Bond (“Ruby) are both nominees for the $25,000 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction. Leslie Jamison’s bestselling “The Empathy Exams” is a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, worth $10,000. Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Sixth Extinction” is a nominee for a $10,000 science writing award.
