On January 14, writers and supporters gathered in New York City to pay tribute to the poet and artist Liu Xia, who has been under extralegal house arrest since her husband, fellow poet, literary critic, and activist Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Peace Prize in october 2010. Rare footage of Liu Xia reading her own poetry under house arrest, filmed in December 2013, was screened for the first time, and Chinese American writers performed a reading of Liu Xia’s poetry, translated for the first time into English by Ming Di and Jennifer Stern. The Independent Chinese PEN Center, PEN American Center, and Friends of Liu Xiaobo organized the event.
