What are you working on right now? i have finished a novel, max weber in oklahoma, which so far no one wants to touch with a ten foot pole (nor a five foot eight german for that matter). i don’t suppose the contributors to this membership forum want to hear of such travails. in the meantime i have turned to writing something more lucrative: sonnets.
What's the best book you read this year?
i’ve been reading german literature, most recently deutschland, eine reise (rowohlt), by wolfgang büscher, and mein jahrhundert (deutscher taschenbuch verlag), by günter grass.
What was the best work in translation you read this year?
the best translations i’ve read lately are morenga (new directions), by uwe timm, translated by breon mitchell, and stanley lombardo’s rendition of iliad (hackett).
What was the best literary event you attended this year? And why? readings by contributors to coal city review. the lawrence area writers and readers are alive and well.
What do you value most about your Membership to PEN?
the proof it supplies that there are people out there who think written literature is important.
For how long have you been a Member of PEN?
several years
Any other news?
two of my sonnets from bartlett’s sonnets, the cycle i’m working on now, were published in coal city review 21: 2006 (lightning source).
