What was the best literary event you attended this year? Al Gore's film Inconvenient Truth, and the book based on the film, because though it's not exactly "literary" it is the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE Facing survival of humanity and its books.
Did you attend any PEN events this year? PEN New Members and New Books by Members night at Housing Works, because I had friends as new members and a new book, and I've been a member since 1978.
What was the most important literary news this year?
When Hugo Chavez of Venezuela held up Noam Chomsky's Failed Nation States at the United Nations and said read it!
What do you value most about your Membership to PEN?
That PEN fights for the 1st amendment and the petition against the Patriot Act...
For how long have you been a Member of PEN?
Since 1978 when my first novel was published by Doubleday and my first book of poems from BOA Editions came out.
What literary topics would you would like to see discussed by PEN Members in an online forum?
How the book is overshadowed by other media in the younger generations. And the future of pubication on the internet, how will writers earn money and preserve copyright in future on the World Wide Web.
Any other news?
I was featured on the Library of Congress Radio Show with a reading and an interview funded by the NEA, The Poet and the Poems in 2006. It airs on public radio stations around the country and is hosted by Grace Cavalieri for over 25 years, and features all the finest poets of the country from Stanley Kunitz to Rita Dove, Billy Collins, and Donald Hall.
