La Décomposition
Author name: Anne Garréta
Publication year: 1999
Original language: French

Clever and darkly comic, La Décomposition is a post-modern murder mystery told by an anonymous narrator whose ambition is to become a serial killer. Failing in his chosen avocation, he decides there can be no personal connection between the killer and his victims. The choice of his victims will be determined, instead, by a set of impersonal but carefully determined criteria. His victims? The characters in Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Why? Because "life is too short and Proust is too long." (Sample available)
