Sequel to Ouregano, 1980, a scathing indictment of colonial Africa seen
through the eyes of a child. Private Property follows Tiffany through
her convent education in France. She is enclosed both physically and
psychologically, yet longs to be with her grandparents on their estate,
their “propriété privée.” The convent school functions as a mirror
image of the estate: in the convent Tiffany is a prisoner, she imagines
herself as a trapped insect but she is nonetheless expelled from school
for not accepting the rules of polite behavior, for not being able to
maintain relationships on the terms in which they are offered to her.
And, like her Grandmother’s love, the estate ultimately remains closed
to her. I am translating this novel on spec. and hope to find a
publisher if Lexington is not interested or is unable to take it on.
